The 2028 Copa América will be the 49th edition of this tournament, the main football competition between the national teams of South America and the oldest in the world, organized by the CONMEBOL, the governing body of football in South America, affiliated with the FIFA.
Host selection
The hosts for the 2028 Copa America has yet to be announced. Potential candidates include:
Ecuador
According to the old host rotation order of CONMEBOL, Ecuador (whose last cup was in 1993) should organize the event, in February 2024 at a meeting between Alejandro Domínguez (president of the CONMEBOL) and government of Daniel Noboa expressed interest in organizing the event.[1][2]
Within the application, eight Ecuadorian cities were proposed to receive the participating teams and host the matches: Quito, Guayaquil, Manta, Cuenca, Machala, Ambato, Riobamba and Salinas were chosen by the Ecuadorian government.[3]
United States
Considering that the United States has greater infrastructure and greater purchasing power than each of the South American countries, it is expected to be confirmed as host in the next edition. According to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, there would be a prior contract between the CONMEBOL and the United States Soccer Federation for the U.S. to host the tournament in 2024 and 2028.[4]
The possibility arises that Uruguay will host (in conjunction with Argentina and Paraguay) the tournament with the aim of enhancing the infrastructure might be used for three opening matches of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.[5][6]
Teams
All 10 CONMEBOL national teams are eligible to enter alongside potential guests:
