Roy Award, the highest Indian medical honor,[3] was honored by the Government of India in 2015 with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.[4] In 2024, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honors, for his outstanding contributions to cardiology.
Early life and education
Tejas Patel was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. He completed his schooling with a national scholarship [1] and graduated in medicine (MBBS) from B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, affiliated with Gujarat University,[5] securing the first rank and a gold medal. He pursued his residency at the Civil Hospital associated with B.J. Medical College and obtained his master's degree (MD) from the same institution.[1][2] Additionally, he earned a DM in Cardiology from the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre.
Career
Dr. Patel began his career at the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in 1992 as an assistant professor of cardiology. In 1997, he was promoted to associate professor. He served as a visiting cardiologist at the Gujarat Research and Medical Institute until 2000. He then joined Krishna Heart Institute, Ahmedabad, as the director and chief interventional cardiologist in 2000 and worked there until 2004. Following this, he had a two-year stint at Sterling Hospital, Ahmedabad, before moving to TCVS, which was rebranded as Apex Heart Institute in 2012. Since then, he has been the chairman and chief interventional cardiologist at Apex Heart Institute.
From February 2008 to October 2022, Dr. Patel was the Professor and Head of Cardiology at Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College, Sheth Vadilal Sarabhai General Hospital (VS Hospital), and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SVPIMSR) in Ahmedabad. In 2013, he was appointed as an Adjunct Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) in the Department of Internal Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, USA. Additionally, he was appointed as a visiting professor of Cardiology at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, USA, in September 2017.
Contributions to interventional cardiology
Dr. Patel is a pioneer of transradial angioplasty in India and is internationally acclaimed for his work in transradial interventions, robotic percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and distant telerobotic PCI.[6] He has trained over 8,000 cardiologists globally through the Transcatheter Intervention Course (TRICO), which he has conducted annually since 2005.
He is the author of three influential books: "Patel’s Atlas of Transradial Intervention: The Basics," "Patel’s Atlas of Transradial Intervention: The Basics & Beyond," and "Patel’s Atlas of Complications of Coronary Interventions: Plan-B," which have been widely utilized as reference books internationally. His research includes 333 publications, comprising three textbooks, 24 chapters in various cardiology textbooks, 198 original articles, and 108 abstracts in reputable national and international journals. Additionally, he co-authored the "White Paper" on transradial intervention techniques for the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (SCAI).

In early 2018, Apex Heart Institute, owned by Dr. Patel, became the first hospital outside the USA to introduce robotic angioplasty and stenting by acquiring the Corindus CorPath Vascular Robotic System GRX200. On December 5, 2018, Dr. Patel and his team made history by performing the world's first-in-man telerobotic coronary intervention from Akshardham Temple to the Cath Lab at Apex Heart Institute, located 32 kilometers away from the patient.
